The Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ)

The Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ) is a think-tank, alternative university and an experimental laboratory set up to train a new generation of reporters in the tools of investigative, in-depth, and long-form journalism across all media. Registered as a charity, we robustly defend investigative journalists and those who work with them.
Established by the late investigative journalist and filmmaker Gavin MacFadyen in 2003, the CIJ quickly established a reputation for educating both journalists, and the public in the craft, culture and methods of journalism in the public interest. With roots both in the United States and in mainland Europe, through an industry-standard training programme in the UK and lively public events and symposia around the world, we work to educate both practitioners and the public on issues of interest to investigative journalism. Via the dissemination of handbooks and online courses in the tradecraft of journalism, and building up a library of literature and resources, we help with the education of journalists both in the UK and overseas.
Since 2003, the key event in our calendar has been the annual #CIJSummer Conference (formerly Summer School) in London. Thus far it’s attracted over two thousand journalists from thirty-five countries: including Iraq, China, Russia, Brazil, South Africa, Mexico and Serbia. Since 2003, the CIJ Summer School’s pioneering training in data journalism, operational and computer security, advanced internet research, Freedom of Information Act requests, business document analysis and the mechanics of story in an age of ubiquitous data have transformed investigations in newsrooms across Britain.

Over the years, CIJ has been supported by a number of foundations including: City University London, Democratie en Media, the Lorana Sullivan Foundation, the Open Society Institute, the Park Foundation, the Reva and David Logan Foundation, the David and Elaine Potter Foundation, the Roddick Foundation and several smaller private trusts.

The Logan CIJ Symposium brought together a unique and powerful coalition of individuals with a single goal – the defence of freedom and democracy.

  • Audio and Video
  • Books
  • The Logan Handbook Series
  • Handbooks

Interviewing Techniques
By CIJ
This handbook will show you how to get the best out of an interview – whether you’re an experienced journalist or beginner. It outlines the techniques and shows you how to go beyond the PR to get to the story.

Data Journalism or Computer Assisted Reporting
